Smallhythe Place, National Trust Sit Back, Relax we did

Smallhythe Place  near Tenterden  in Kent , is a half timbred  house built in the late 15th or early 16th century and since 1947 cared for by the National Trust . The house was originally called 'Port House' and before the River Rother  and the sea receded it served a thriving shipyard


It  was the home to the renowed Victorian actress Ellen Terry from 1899 to 1928, and contains her fascinating theatre collection. 

The cottage grounds include her rose garden, orchard, nuttery and the working Barn Theatre.




 A theatrical themed programme of events includes unique open-air theatre, indoor plays and music in the Barn Theatre. Family fun days, including children's theatre. Smallhythe Music and Beer Festival in September. Dogs allowed on leads in grounds


Eating and Shopping the theatre tea room offers a variety of refreshments during the day and for evening performaces

With fascinating stories attached to each garment, costume tours are an opportunity to discover a rich theatrical history. Costume tours also take place at other times throughout the week, so it is always worth calling the property before your visit if you would like to join a tour. Booking Advisable.
